North Andover Farmers Market veterans program exceeds expectations

[Wicked Local Staff Photo/Bryan McGonigle] Hide caption NORTH ANDOVER – The North Andover Farmers Market wrapped up its third summer season in September, but one thing was different this time – this season saw the debut of their Veterans’ Food Security program, which exceeded organizers’ expectations. The Farmers Market, which ran from June 16 until Sept. 29, launched the new program which provided low-income veterans and their families vouchers for the market in order to provide fresh food and products to a deserving generation. The 2019 season kickoff at Wine Connextion accumulated enough money that completely funded this year’s program and will also be sufficient enough to fund next year’s program, according to the organizers. Donated funds built on the initial $2,000 donation in vouchers donated by the Merchants Association. Vendors also supported the initiative by contributing their own touch on the cause, said Veteran Services Director for North Andover and Boxford Joe LeBlanc. “Two tokens worth $5 were given to each participant in the veteran voucher program, and these tokens were redeemable by those who run the market,” said LeBlanc. “A lot of them wouldn’t even take their tokens. They would tell them to save it for the next voucher they visited,“said LeBlanc. The benefits of the program go beyond giving back to current and past service members. It also gave the community the opportunity to show gratitude to those who served our country, said LeBlanc.
